Spiny-tailed lizards are easily identified because of their tails that are flat and covered with thorny scales. Uros are medium sized agile agama lizards inhabiting African desert environment – unfriendly, hot and scarce in humidity. Many species of spiny-tailed lizards are characterized by beautiful colors that you can admire all day long. Spiny-tailed lizards are herbivorous and this is their most desired feature because feeding them is much more comfortable than in case of insectivores lizards. Spiny-tailed lizards born in captivity get easily accustomed to their keepers and are not so difficult to care for as it is generally presumed.

UROMASTYX NIGRIVENTRIS

Moroccan uros are impressive spiny-tailed lizards and they are among the largest species of their kind. They are athletic build animals with broad heads and relatively short limbs. The shape of their body is similar to that of Saharan uromastix but Moroccan spiny-tailed lizards are much larger. Uromastyx Acanthinura Nigrivetris (Moroccan spiny-tailed lizard) subspecies is distinguished by their interesting multi-colored pigmentation. You can see yellow, orange and red specimen with white, white-blue and black heads. Their characteristic feature is a black spot on their neck allowing for easy identification of this particular species. A female is as beautiful as a male and this is rare among spiny-tailed lizards and makes them even more attractive for keepers. Moroccan uros grow slowly and reach the age of puberty late – it takes more or less five years but the final effect is really worth waiting.

UROMASTYX GEYRI

Saharan uromastyx are medium-sized spiny-tailed lizards – grown-up specimen can be 38 centimeters long and can weigh over 200 g. There are two basic varieties – the yellow variety and the red one but there are numerous alternations starting with delicate cool yellow colors through intensive color of the egg yolk and orange and finishing with intensive red. Some animals have intense black coloring especially on their limbs and dewlaps and others lack such black additions, so by no means we can say their pigmentation is monotonous. As far as intensity of colors is concerned Saharan uros are the most eye-catching lizards in the world of spiny-tailed lizards. Male lizards boast of beautiful colors including characteristic vivid pigmentation of underbelly; nevertheless female lizards also present nice colors. Their body structure is a bit different from the body structure of ornate or Oman spiny-tailes lizards. Paws of Uromastyx geyri are not so large and heads of adult lizards are very broad, especially in case of males. Spiny-tailed lizards are well known and popular in the world of Western keepers. Their popularity results not only from their size and beautiful pigmentation but also from their disposition. They are among the most active spiny-tailed lizards and periods of their activity are one of the longest – it means that they leave their burrows early and are active till late at night. It allows their keepers to enjoy observing their behavior longer. These lizards are not skittish and they easily get accustomed to contacts with their keeper. Youngsters born in captivity are a good choice for beginners.

UROMASTYX THOMASI

Oman spiny-tailed lizards are rather small and they look like a result of a successful attempt to create a mock image of a spiny-tailed lizard. Their relatively small heads resembling tortoise heads and big, powerful paws like the ones borrowed from a larger lizard, big bellies and round, flat mosaic tails make their look a little bit funny. You simply smile when you look at them. Oman spiny-tailed lizards are relatively rare among reptile fans because they are expensive, but the young ones regularly hatched in captivity slowly change this situation. Oman spiny-tailed lizard is a very interesting choice for people looking for a small herbivorous reptile with original looks.

UROMASTYX OCELLATA

Ocellated spiny-tailed lizards are smaller spiny-tailed lizards – they are not longer than 30 centimeters. Because of their size they are the perfect choice for those people who would like to have a spiny-tailed lizard but they cannot afford to have a big terrarium. Moreover, some females are as colorful as males and this is yet another advantage. It is interesting that females are bigger than their partners and that is exceptional in the agama world. It happens that ocellated spiny-tailed lizards are a little shy and skittish but their beautiful colors and modest requirements certainly make up for that.
